Lychee is the sole member of the genus Litchi in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. It is a tropical tree native to the Guangdong, Fujian, and Yunnan provinces of Southeast and Southwest China, where cultivation is documented from the 11th century. China is the main producer of lychees, followed by India, other countries in Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Madagascar and South Africa.
Usage
Lychees are a wonderful sweet juice laden fruit and can be eaten as such. Chill it and eat on hotter days. It is used in fruit salads and the syrup made from it can be used to blend cocktails or mocktails. People find innovative ways of using it too. The Lychee juice prepared from the it is also refreshingly sweet. Wrapped in paper and placed in a perforated zip-lock bag it stays fresh for upto a week in the refrigerator.
